Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How is Keyboard Classroom different from other, less expensive learn-to-type programs?
Using the precision teaching approach, educators at the Ben Bronz Academy developed the
software specifically for children having difficulty in school. By focusing on timed, one minute fluency exercises, research shows
that students can learn to pay attention over that span, creating significant learning opportunities.
Q: What's the difference between a single, dual, 5 and 25 user license?
Keyboard Classroom automatically customizes itself for each student. If you have more than one child who wants to use the program, they each must have their own ID, so a multiple user license is necessary. The 25 site license can be installed on a local area network (LAN) for use in schools.
Q: Can Keyboard Classroom help children with autism?
While there are varying degrees of autism, our software has successfully helped a number of autistic students.
Generally, autistic children do not communicate well with others but learn rote skills very easily. The program is
built upon the principle of repetition and practice.
Q: My child is always playing on the computer and is pretty fast at typing. Why do they need Keyboard Classroom?
Motor skills are not typing skills. The old “hunt and peck” method of keyboarding is fine for computer games, email,
and basic communication but unless children learn proper finger placement, accuracy will suffer. Learning to type will lead
to improvement in school work, effective note taking, and eventually, success in the working world.
Q: What about all of the voice recognition and word predictability programs on the market? Why would my child still need Keyboard Classroom?
Voice recognition and word prediction software can be invaluable in learning basic skills but they don’t necessarily mimic
the real world. Students with LD must learn how to type in order to function in a mainstream education environment. Keyboard
Classroom is complementary to the various voice recognition and word predictability programs on the market today.
Q: Will Keyboard Classroom work on all computers?
Currently, our software will only run on Windows-enabled personal computers operating XP and Vista operating systems. It is not compatible with Macintosh operating
systems unless you are running "parallel" software.
Q: What do I get when I purchase the Keyboard Classroom program?
In addition to the five tutorial program, your child will also receive our patented finger guides. Finger Guides attach to
a standard computer keyboard with Velcro pads and guide a child’s fingers to the correct keys, allowing them to learn touch-typing
without incorrect, error-prone moves. You'll also be eligible to participate in regularly scheduled webinars and conferences, where
you can communicate with leading LD experts from around the country
Q: How can you guarantee it will teach my child to type?
No software, not matter how sophisticated works by itself. The Keyboard Classroom program is designed for children with a
majority of learning disabilities who can commit to at least 15 minutes of practice per day. Parents must be involved as coaches,
assuring that students do their exercises properly. Our experience suggests that after a short time, children will be self motivated,
will want to practice their typing skills by themselves, and will become proficient typists within 6 to 10 months.
Q: Is Keyboard Classroom available in other languages?
Keyboard Classroom software is not designed for other languages at the moment but check back soon.
Q: Does Keyboard Classroom have any other products to help my child?
There are no other programs currently available in the Keyboard Classroom portfolio but several software packages are being
evaluated. Check back soon.
Q: Can you tell me more about the Ben Bronz Academy?
Based in West Hartford, Connecticut, Ben Bronz Academy is a day school for learning disabled students in Grades 2 through 12.
Twenty-six faculty members guide 60 students through an intensive school day that includes Meta-Learning, fluencies, remedial reading,
writing, mathematics, literature, science, and social studies. Oral language is developed and stressed in all classes. LD students
come to the Academy with a median deficit of 3 years in reading but eight out of ten students return to or exceed normal reading
growth in their first year of enrollment. 80% of all graduates have gone on to the academic or vocational pursuit of their choice.
